Gov. Okpebholo's Agenda On Agric, Revealed

....what we are doing has never been done in the history of Edo state -Edo Commissioner for Agriculture

Today, Thursday 16th April 2026, Hon. Dr. Jerry Uwangue, the Edo state Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, revealed to the farmers in Esan Central Local Government, ECLG, area, that the governor of Edo state, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, mandated him to get a detail record of all the farmers operating in all the local government areas in Edo state, to make it easy for farm inputs, Agricultural extension services and other benefits from Edo state government to get to the farmers directly.

Speaking with the farmers in a meeting that held at the local government secretariat council hall, Dr. Uwangue said; "... We are here today, on the mandate and instruction of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, to meet our farmers at the grassroots across the 18 local government areas of the state, to enlighten them and tell them what the Ministry is doing, to find out what our farmers' challenges are, and to know how and where we can support them, in other to enhance production".


Continuing, Hon. Uwangue who told them that the days when the real farmers are shortchanged, and farm inputs from the government are highjacked by those who are not farmers, are over; added that, with the data and statistics of the farmers at the grassroots, that is being collected as the exercise continues, whatever support that is meant for farmers, will get directly to them.


Speaking with Newsmen, the Commissioner, who pointed out that his meeting with the farmers in Esan Central Local Government area, revealed some of the challenges the farmers are facing, including; insecurity, inability for them to sell their products at good prices, lack of credit facilities and inaccessible farmlands, amongst others, noted that, Governor Okpebholo is already tackling the insecurity challenges being faced in the state, especially with the regularization of the employment status of the members of a Edo state Security Corps whose duty it is to monitor activities in our forests, as well as the grading of road; saying, arrangements are underway for off-takers to buy off farm products and relieve farmers of the worries of sales of their produce.


The Edo state Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security also clarified that His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo state, has separated the Ministry of livestock from the Ministry of Agriculture and food Security, saying; "...I believe what we have done here today, the Ministry of Livestock will do the same."


Hon. Dr. Uwangue said; "... Let it be on record that what we are doing has never been done in the history of Edo state. This is the very first time in the history of the state that the Commissioner is coming to the grassroot to meet with the farmers to have a direct discussion with them..."


The Edo state Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, concluded by urging the farmers to take advantage of the array of opportunities being provided by Governor Okpebholo even as he commended Esan Central Local Government Area Chairman, for the Palm kernel plantation farm within the premises of the local government Council secretariat.

Those that accompanied the Commissioner on the tour, include; Mrs. Bamayi Osedebamen, the Functioning Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Princewill Igbinedion, the Agricultural Development Project, ADP, Programme Manager and Mr. Ogunbor David, the Director, Agric Services. Others include, Mrs Osezuwa Igbinevbo, Mrs. Oyenwen Aleme, both of the Agric Services and Mrs. Okojie Francisca, the Public Relations Officer, PRO.


The Chairman, Esan Central Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Kelvin Ainiyalenhimi Iyere, who was unavoidably absent, was represented by Hon. Pastor Davies Oigbochie, the Secretary to the local government area.


Other Esan Central Local Government Area Council leadership present, are Mrs. Rita Ogun, the Director of General Services, DAGS, Mrs. Ikhelua Ruth, the Treasurer to the Local Government, TLG,  Mr. Ebinehita Ujiadughe, the Head of Department, HoD Agric,  amongst others.
