The Chairman, Esan Central Local Government, ECLG, area, Rt. Hon. Kelvin Iyere Ainiyelenhimi, on Friday, 28th February 2025, explained why the debris that has accumulated for over a decade inside Irrua market, needed priority attention, during the ongoing cleanup exercise in the local government, saying; "we have a duty to our people".
Speaking in Irrua Market, on Friday, which was Irrua Market day, the Chairman, said; "even though, other areas in Esan Central local government area, equally needed the cleanup exercise, the Irrua market needed urgent attention, because of the heap of debris that had accumulated for over a decade in one of the stalls, which, on a yearly basis, during rainy seasons, the odour that comes from the stench, was a thing of serious concern, as the health of the people around the environment,was at risk.
"Within the short time that I have been in office, I received several complaints from the people with respect to the heap of debris. We therefore, decided to be pragmatic with respect to the immediate evacuation of the debris.
Continuing, the Chairman said, from our findings, the people that live around the market, are mainly the ones that dump their refuse in the demolished stalls, and this has been going on for over a decade, and now that the accumulated refuse has been removed, the next thing is to work out modalities of erecting closed stores in the place, and also set up a Task Force that will be responsible for enforcing proper dumping of refuse in and around the market area.
The local government council chairman, who said the members of the public will be sensitized with respect to the proper dumping of refuse in and around the market area, also warned that, anyone caught flouting the refuse dumping instructions, will be dealt with according to the law, as it is costing the local government huge amount of money to evacuate the debris that are often littered indiscriminately in and around the market.
